講座題目:Predictable Orthodontic Treatment
Abstract: The long term goal of this project is to make clinical orthodontic treatment predictable for reducing the side effects, need for correction, number of office visits, and treatment time, all of which benefits clinician and patient. The predictability relies on well-controlled treatment strategies and knowledge of clinical outcomes. Engineering technologies have been developed to control the strategies in terms of quantification of clinical three dimensional (3D) load systems and identification of dominant control parameters; and to quantify the clinical outcomes in terms of treatment time, tooth movement, and root resorption. Biological response in terms of local inflammation and quality of bone are also monitored. The outcomes of this study provide the evidence as how the tooth moves in response to the applied orthodontic load. They will also provide insight into ways of reducing iatrogenic side effects and into the necessary evidence-based trade-offs for optimized treatment. With the knowledge gained, future orthodontic appliances will be designed to reduce side effects and treatment time. Furthermore, these results will provide a foundation for innovative mechanics that optimizes other orthodontic treatments.
